An Overview Of Quartz Countertops For Minneapolis Homes

Many people in Minneapolis know that Granite Unlimited, Inc. is a leading provider of quality natural stone countertops in the area. We offer granite and marble in some amazing colors and designs, plus we also provide more exotic natural stone options such as soapstone, which is a unique option.

We are also leading providers of quartz countertops. As this is a bit different than our other countertop options, it is always helpful to take a closer look at this option for kitchens and bathrooms throughout the home.

What is Quartz?

Quartz is a mineral that is mostly composed of silicon in combination with oxygen molecules. There are many different types and colors of quartz, including some that are semi-precision gemstones. These include amethyst, citrine and rose quartz among many others.

There is a highly prize clear quartz, which is often used in carving to create amazing sculptures and serving dishes, predominantly in European countries. In ancient times throughout Europe, this very hard mineral was also used to create tools.

How are Countertops Made?

While it is possible to have a solid quartz or a natural stone type of countertop made of this material, this is extremely rare and very costly. Instead, today’s quartz countertops use a combination of ground quartz and aggregates of quartz combined with resin. The quartz makes up about 95% of the mixture while the resin is used to hold everything together and is about 5%.

The resin and quartz combination makes a durable, long-lasting countertop that doesn’t need to be sealed. In fact, the quartz countertops we install will look the same in 5, 10, 15 or 25 years as they do today with just basic maintenance.

With the variety of quartz colors and the ability to enhance the resin by adding color, the choices in these countertops provide the texture, color, and style that is perfect for any Minneapolis home.
