Once people have completed their renovation or their new home construction in Minneapolis, they are ready to start enjoying their beautiful new living space. If one of the renovations included the addition of natural stone countertops, there are some simple habits you can start to use immediatelythat will help to retain the look of the natural stone and provide extended life to the sealant.
At Granite Unlimited, Inc., our expert staff will always take the time to go over all the basic maintenance and cleaning for the type of natural stone you have selected. While there are some differences, most of the cleaning and maintenance tips will be good for all types of natural stone.
Wipe Up Spills Immediately
The longer that spills sit on any countertop, the harder they are to clean. By getting in the habit of wiping up liquids and solids immediately, there is a limited chance of any type of stain or etched area occurring on the surface.
Use a damp microfiber cloth to remove spills and accidents as they happen. This is particularly important with any type of acidic product such as coffee, vinegar,tomato-based products, red wine or fruit juices. This is the same for beauty products or cleaning solutions in the bathroom.
If the stain does become sticky and hard to remove, never scrape or scrub, this will remove or scratch the sealant. Instead, use the recommended granite or marble cleaning product and follow the instructions.
Use a Trivet
A common mistake is to place hot pots and pans directly on your natural stone countertops in the kitchen. While natural stone is very durable, sudden exposure to high heat may result in a crack in the stone. At the very least the heat will result in a dulling of the sealant.
Take the time to use a trivet to protect your natural stone countertops. If you have any questions about our counters in your Minneapolis home, give us a call today at 952-469-5242.
